What you need to know

Small in size but big on character and significance, the Golden Dragon Museum is an excellent little attraction that helps chronicle the important role of Chinese immigrants in the development of Bendigo as a fledgling city during the 1800's. With over 150 years' worth of impact to cover, the museum features an interesting variation of Chinese clothing, artefacts and art, with exhibits that are well-curated and with more extensive descriptions than your average museum that help provide context as to their use.

Of particular interest are the large (and gorgeous) carved jade carriage that is incredibly impressive in its intricacy, as well as the namesake dragons from the annual Easter parade held in Bendigo. The dragon is massive - and the largest of its kind in existence in a museum - while remaining bright and colourful despite its age. Kids can enjoy a visit here as well, as not only are the exhibits impressive to look at, but they are also provided with activity sheets to keep them occupied while learning. Children can also take the chance to feed the Koi (carp) fish in the pond.

The Golden Dragon Museum also has a lovely little Chinese garden alongside it that makes for a pleasant stroll, as well as a temple area which feels tranquil to visit and within which incense can be lit for an extra dose of scented goodness.
