What you need to know

A simply mammoth feat of construction - and quite an unexpected architectural feature for a regional Victorian destination - the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion is a sacred Buddhist monument being built within the scrub surrounds of Bendigo's outskirts. Still currently a work in progress that won't be completed for another several years, yet still worth visiting in its current state, the Stupa sits atop a small hill with its massive, white-stone walls making for an impressive and stark contrast with the surrounding Aussie bush landscape. Upon completion the building will be the largest of its kind in the Western world, however even making the relatively short drive from Bendigo to the site in the present day results in an instant feeling of peace and serenity.

Visitors to the Stupa are free to look around the site and its various in-construction buildings and grounds areas; it's inhabited by monks whom the public are able to meet and take the chance to inspect their living quarters. Free guided tours are also available to see the Stupa's insides and witness the interior of the build's surprising scale firsthand, and there's even the ability to stay overnight in basic accommodations at one of its retreats.

The site is currently home to a Buddhist library, gift and souvenir shops while some lovely gardens are also being developed that will round out the overall atmosphere of the site wonderfully. If you're looking for a completely different attraction that's enjoyable to simply visit, relax and contemplate your existence, the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion makes for a refreshing itinerary item for any trip to Bendigo - and one that's being built entirely on the back of a combination of dedication and donations.
