What you need to know

Perhaps the most striking single piece of architecture in Bendigo, the Sacred Heart Cathedral is an impressive example of English Gothic style construction that sits in a prominent hillside position alongside the city's main road. Relatively recently constructed for a cathedral of this type, the towering building reaches nearly 87m high at its apex and is comprised largely of sandstone and granite, making for a brown-yellow facade topped with multiple impressive spires. The building stands as an amazing example of dedication to craftsmanship, with every aspect both inside and out intricately carved and a luxurious use of marble in the interior.

The cathedral incorporates only a relatively conservative use of stained glass compared to other such buildings, however what exists is beautifully done - and with a nod to local historic icon Mary MacKillop included. A visit here doesn't require any particular religious belief to appreciate, as the sheer beauty of the building and skill involved in its construction is impressive enough in and of itself; it's particularly refreshing to step inside on a hot day, take a seat in one of the pews, and enjoy the peace and serenity. It's not just the architecture itself that's worth viewing, either, as the Sacred Heart Cathedral also has a variety of interesting items and artifacts on display, with friendly staff that are always willing to help provide context on each.

Within walking distance from Bendigo's city centre, this cathedral is both an essential visit - and a must-shoot photo subject - during your time in Bendigo.
