What you need to know

An incredibly cute display of nature at work, Waitaki is home to a colony of the smallest penguins in the world - the blue penguin - at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. With a nest under a cliff on the foreshore of the town, the attraction is well set up to maximise viewing opportunities. Visitors are able to watch these adorable, small animals come back to shore to settle into their burrows after a big day out in the water.

The Centre serves as a wonderful example of sustainable tourism, allowing visitors reasonable access while still bearing the welfare of the penguins themselves as top priority. With a visit to the colony, travellers can also take a behind-the-scenes tour of the grounds and watch as these animals scurry past at foot-level.

Those looking to get up close to these animals can take a day tour or enter in the evening to explore the grounds of Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony. To see the animals returning home, the evening viewing session makes for a great option with two tours available; general entry and premium tour to get up close to these lovely little creatures.
