Location

  • Although Taronga Western Plains Zoo is only a five to six hour drive from Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle, there's so much to see and do on the way that we recommend you take it nice and slowly

Getting around by Car

  • The Zoo operates on a 6km one-way circuit system, with the animal exhibits and picnic grounds situated along the route. Most exhibits can be seen from the road, but a few require you to walk a short distance. The Zoo circuit is a public road and normal road rules apply at all times

Getting around by Bike

  • An ideal way to experience the Zoo is by bike or on foot. Bikes are available for hire, but visitors are welcome to bring their own. While the Zoo also provides helmets, it is recommended that visitors bring their own where possible
  • The Zoo does not take bookings for hire bikes, and as some specialty bikes are in high demand during weekends and school holidays visitors should enquire at the hire shed upon arrival to arrange the best option
  • It is important to remember that the Zoo circuit is a public road and normal road rules apply at all times.
  • The first half of the Zoo circuit has a slight incline, but otherwise it is reasonably flat. During the warmer months be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat and drink plenty of water

Hire Rates

  • Push Bike - $15 per hire (4hrs)
  • Bike 'n Tow - $25 per hire (4hrs) - limited number available for hire
  • Bike 'n Caboose - $29 per hire (4hrs) - limited number available for hire
  • Child Seat (for push bike) - $5 per hire (4hrs)

Getting around by Cart

  • Electric carts are available for hire. Like the bikes, on the Zoo does not take bookings on hire carts. Carts are in high demand during weekends and school holidays, so we recommend that visitors enquire about their availability at the hire shed upon arrival at the Zoo

Wonderful activity to do with the kids. Recommend using the electric cars! There are some stretches that are far to walk between. The turtles at the end are amazing. Foodwise its a bit crap, recommend bringing your own picnic. It can get dusty and quite crowded.

I had not expected the Zoo
Andrew 3 years ago

I had not expected the Zoo, known for its breeding and study programs, to be so well presented, organised, landscaped, attractive and accommodating to the visiting public. Staff are friendly and professional. The animals all look very healthy, content & peaceful. I have been on a real safari in Africa but here you get far closer and see so much more detail of the animals [without the fear!] There are play areas for children, picnic areas for all and a pleasant restaurant with a gift shop and all the facilities. You can drive around the 6km circuit, walk or hire bikes or multi-seater buggies. There is overnight accommodation in luxury lodges overlooking the "savannah" stocked with giraffe, ostrich and roaming herds of different species or modest tents in an enclosure near the Australian exhibits. What I found quite remarkable was that there were no Zoo pongs just the refreshing smell of eucalypts and other bush flora. In all, a wonderful experience for all ages.

To ensure you and your kids get the most out of your visit follow our simple tips, such as planning your route โ€“ Taronga Western Plains Zoo is a large zoo โ€“ and donโ€™t forget the sunscreen!
